DET to Shutdown old DNS Servers Permanently

The DET networks branch have advised that the "old" DNS servers will be permanently shutdown from Thursday 30th October. The DET have provided a list of schools where computers are still accessing the old servers (as well as the IP addresses of those computers). These computers will not be able to access the Internet or Intranet when the old DNS servers are shutdown.

Might be a good job for Term 4! Have a safe and relaxing holiday!


Apple Pulls OSX 10.2.8 Update

DET Auto Proxy Changes

The DET pac file, which automates your Internet proxy settings, appears to have changed recently. If your school can no longer access "external" sites, while still accessing "internal" sites, check your pac file.

Mac OS X Server - DNS Setup (pdf - 600k)

Mac OS X Server depends on reliable access to a Domain Name Server (DNS). This document decribes a simple local DNS setup, which reduces dependency on DET WAN access. Requires the Bindery application (free).

Worldcom Proxy Issues

If your school is using the DET Worldcom proxy, you will need to include a list of "exceptions" in the proxy setup, to provide access to internal DET web sites.

New MS Virus Alert

Yesterday, Microsoft released yet another Critical Security Update for Windows XP, 2000 and NT workstations and servers. A new patch must be applied to all XP/2000/NT workstations. This is a different patch to those previously used for the w32.Blaster and Welchia Worms.

DET Schools' IP Address Range

DET Networks have designated the allocation of IP addresses in NSW schools. It is critical that schools refer to this allocation when installing new equipment. Also includes information for setting up a local proxy server. (DET Intranet access required.)

Retina Scan - Scan for Unpatched Windows Computers

Prevent further Welchia and Blaster worm infections on your Windows NT/2000/XP computers - use Retina DCOM Scanner to identify computers on your school's LAN which remain "unpatched".

Blaster Guy Arrested!

Police have arrested a teenage suspect in relation to the w32.Blaster worm which has kept us all busy for the last 2 weeks!
