DET to Shutdown old DNS Servers Permanently

One last reminder that the DET Networks Branch will close down their "old" DNS servers permanently from Thursday 30th October. Any school computers which have not been updated will lose internet access from this date.

DVD Capture (Mac OS X)

A small freeware application, used to capture "stills" from DVDs playing on your computer. See also Snapz Pro (shareware) which will capture just a selected part of a DVD screen.

iTunes 4.1 for Mac & Win

This great jukebox software, for archiving, ripping and burning music to CD and DVD is now available for Windows, as well as Mac. Check out the online Music Store from within iTunes.

PickChar (Mac OS X)
(Wednesday 15th October 2003)
A small freeware application, similar to PopChar, which provides access to "hidden" characters in font sets. Particularly useful with Zapf Dingbats, and other picture fonts.

Rugby World Cup - Online Education Resources
(Tuesday 14th October 2003)
Designed for teachers of upper primary and lower secondary classes. Features lesson plans and online student activities for various KLAs.

URGENT: DET to Shutdown old DNS Servers Permanently
(Monday 13th October 2003 - repeated from last term)
The DET Networks Branch have advised that the "old" DNS servers will be permanently shutdown from Thursday 30th October.

The DET have provided a list of schools where computers are still accessing the old servers (as well as the IP addresses of those computers). Check the DET list for computers in your school - these computers will not be able to access the Internet or Intranet when the old DNS servers are shutdown.


Apple Release Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update

The "fixed" 10.2.8 update is now available, for both desktops and servers. ("Combo" updates are available here). Apple also advises that Panther (OSX 10.3) will be available on the 24th October.

DCOMbobulator Checks your PC's Worm Vulnerabilty
(Monday 13th October 2003)
The recent spate of worms exploited Windows DCOM facility. This small (28k) utility checks whether or not the DCOM worm patches you applied were successful, and provides the option to disable DCOM altogether. Some interesting background reading too!
