- W32.Welchia
Worm
- (Monday
25th August 2003)
URGENT!! Access
to the Internet through the DET WAN has ground almost to a halt,
due to the W32.Welchia worm.
This worm affects Windows 2000 and XP computers and servers. It does not affect
Mac, Win 95/98, or Win Me. It makes most infected PCs generate enormous amounts
of network traffic ("ping requests") in an attempt to discover other
PCs to infect.
It is vital that all Windows NT4, 2000 and XP workstations and servers are
patched and checked for the presence of this worm.
This procedure is ADDITIONAL to those steps detailed for the W32.Blaster.Worm and
should be run after those steps have been completed on each PC.
Full details at Symantec.
Other information for DET schools, including a scanning tool, is available
from the DET Antivirus
page (DET Intranet access required).
Another useful scanning tool is Retina
Scan.
