Speed-up Firefox

(Monday 11th April 2005)

As if the FireFox browser wasn't fast enough already, you can tweak the "under-the-hood" configuration settings to send multiple requests for page data, if you have a broadband connection.

1.Type
about:config into the address bar and hit return:
Scroll down and look for the following entries:

- network.http.pipelining

- network.http.proxy.pipelining

- network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.

When you enable pipelining (see below) the browser will make several requests at once, which can speed up page loading.

2. Alter the above entries as follows:
- Set network.http.pipelining to true. (Double-clicking will do this).

- Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true.

- Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to a number like 30.
(Right-click [PC] or Control-click [Mac] to alter the setting).

This means that FireFox will now make 30 requests at once.

3. More Tweaks
The adjustments above are just the basics. Check out Darrell Norton's Weblog for stacks more geeky tweaks.
