Twitter - Readers & Publishers

Twitter IconTwitter is a "micro-blogging" environment where contributors (tweeters) publish posts (tweets) with a maximum of 140 characters.

Twitter has been designed primarily for mobile use - it is easy to read and publish tweets from the new breed of smart phones.

While not originally designed with the same intent in mind, Twitter can also be used as something of a news aggregator, and is now widely used by politicians (or at least their PR people) and other public figures to build relationships with their communities.

Read Twitter Posts   Publish to Twitter
You can read a tweeter's tweets simply by visiting their Twitter site.

If you are interested in following the posts of multiple tweeters then you need to create your own Twitter profile at the Twitter site.

Web Access
You can access your favourite Twitter feeds via the web on any computer.

Once you have setup your own Twitter profile you can subscribe to other's tweets, and view their aggregated posts by logging in to your Twitter site.

You can also setup widgets or gadgets to feed Twitter into your blogs, etc. (See your blog site for available widgets.)

Locally Installed Software
You can install software on your computer which will monitor your Twitter site and keep you updated with new tweets from those that you are following.

There are stacks of desktop Twitter apps listed at the Twitter Fan Wiki for both Macintosh, Windows, and Linux.

If you are just getting started with this stuff, try the following software:

Twitterific (Mac, iPod/iPhone)
Tweetie (Mac, iPod/iPhone)
TweetDeck (Mac, Win, iPod/iPhone)
TwitterFon (iPod/iPhone)
SimplyTweet (iPod/iPhone)
TwitterVision (iPod/iPhone)
Twittelator (iPod/iPhone)
Tweetr (Mac, Win)
twhirl (Mac, Win)

All the software that is used to read Twitter posts is also used to publish tweets.

Choose an option from the list of software on the left - what software you choose to use really depends on what hardware and OS you are using.

Of course, you can also simply login to your Twitter site and update your posts there. (Remember though that your tweets cannot be edited after they are published.)

  Publish Twitter Feeds

Rather than logging in to Twitter, or installing a Twitter client, you can embed a Twitter feed in a regular website or blog using a widget.

For example, the Flash widget below displays the wazmac twitterings, and is available from the Twitter Widgets site:

This might be handy to display multiple Twitter feeds on the same page.
Other Publishing Stuff   Publish a Twitter Search
TwitterFeed
Publish your RSS feed automatically to your Twitter page, for all your followers!

Wazza's RSS Feed Examples
Display your RSS feed in other formats - embed in other pages, and feed to other services, such as Twitter.
Alternatively you can embed a Twitter search feed in your web site.

Search for a tagged Twitter conversation at search.twitter.com - look on the results page (top right corner) for the RSS feed address of the search result.

As an example, below is the feed from a search for #DERNSW:
