RSS News - Readers & Publishers

RSS News IconRSS (Really Simple Syndication) news readers, also known as aggregators, enable you to subscribe to RSS news "feeds" from a variety of news sources, thus "aggregating" news of interest to you in one convenient location.

Also listed below are links to software that will enable you to create your own news feed attached to your web site. This could be an ideal way for teachers to share assignment information with groups of students, or for schools to share news updates with their local communities.

The information below is far from comprehensive, and is provided for those who are getting started.

Liferea (Lin)

Google Reader

If you maintain a web site with regularly changing content you might find it useful to publish your own RSS feeds.

An RSS feed is really just an additional page in your web site. This page usually mirrors an existing news page in your site, but is in a slightly different format - you will notice the xml, atom, or rss extension on a feed page, rather than the usual htm or html.

If you use one of the popular blog sites, such as Blogger or Wordpress, to publish your news, an RSS feed is created automatically, at the address below.....

Blogger:
http://yoursite.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

WordPress:
http://yoursite.wordpress.com/feed/

EduBlogs:
http://yoursite.edublogs.org/feed/

If you have a "regular" web site, you will either need to embed a blog into the news section of your web site, using the blog's automatically-generated RSS page, or create an additional RSS page containing your news.

You can read about how to incorporate a blog into your web site by following the News link at the Somewhere PS demo site.

Alternatively, you can use some software that is designed specifically to create RSS pages, and which allows you to maintain a little more control over your feeds, to create an RSS page within your web site:
FeedForAll (Mac, Win)
RSS Dreamfeeder (Mac, Win)
Feed Editor (Win)
RSS Wizard - HTML Converter (Win)
