Screen Capture Utilities
Most educators will, at some stage, find the need to present pictures and video captured directly from a computer screen.

Both the
Macintosh and Windows OS provide built-in screen capture capabilities, albeit fairly basic on Windows. This page provides some info about these built-in mechanisms, as well as links to 3rd party commercial, shareware and freeware applications, which provide some more advanced capabilities.

Macintosh   Windows

Built-in Options (Macintosh)
Cmd-Shift-3
Takes a snapshot of the entire screen, (with camera sound effect!) and saves it automatically to the user's desktop folder as Picture 1. Subsequent screen shots will be stored on the desktop as Picture 2, Picture 3, etc.

Cmd-Shift-4
Converts your cursor to a "cross-hair", allowing you to define a specific rectangular area of the screen to capture. This includes drop down menus, after you release the mouse button.

Cntrl-Cmd-Shift-4
Same as above, except the captured image is pasted to the Clipboard, rather than being stored on the desktop as Picture 1. The image can then be pasted directly into a document.

Capture an entire window only
To capture a particular window, in the Finder or an application, follow the Cmd-Shift-4 options above to capture a particular area of the screen, then press the space bar after you see the cross-hair.

The cross-hair will change to a camera which you can click on the chosen window to capture to the desktop or clipboard.

Grab
OSX also includes the Grab utility, (in the Utlities Folder) designed for "grabbing" screen shots.

After launching Grab, choose the type of capture you want to use from the Capture menu.

Then use Cmd-Tab to switch to the application where you want to make the screen capture:

If you hold down the Cmd key, each time you press the Tab key the next active application will be selected in the Dock. Release both keys when the desired application is selected.

You can then take your screen grab, and copy and paste it into whatever application you are using for your publication.

3rd Party Mac Software
There are a number of comprehensive screen capture offerings for the Mac, which offer more options than the basic screen capture, including making movies of on-screen procedures, and capturing pictures from the DVD Player (which the in-built options can't do).

Capture Me
Includes a floating capture window, with resize and invert ability.

DVD Capture
An extension to Apple's DVD Player that enables screen captures of DVDs in full screen mode, in three different sizes. The captured images can be saved to a file or placed on the clipboard.

InstantShot
Capture the whole screen, a portion of it, or a window. Includes the option to make timed screenshots or to make delayed captures over time.

NetFixer
Takes screenshots of entire web pages (including the bits that don't fit on the screen!).

Paparazzi
Take screenshots of entire web pages, including the bits that you need to scroll down to see!

Screen Shot Plus 2.3
Neat Dashboard widget lets you take screenshots on the fly. Save to HD or clipboard, in a variety of formats, etc. Free.

ScreenCaptureGUI
Takes timed screen captures while you have a DVD paused or playing in Apple's DVD Player application.

ScreenFlow
A complete workflow for creating video screencasts. Able to capture your desktop, video camera, microphone & computer audio at the same time. 10.5 only.

ShotChoice
Change the file type of OSX built-in screen shots from png to jpeg, gif, pdf, etc.

Snapz Pro X
Snapz Pro X is an application which can be accessed using a keyboard shortcut from within any other application.

Provides dedicated capture of entire screen, windows, menus, or a user defined selection. Screen shots are saved to the clipboard, or to a pre-defined folder, in a variety of graphic formats.

Also includes "screen cam" screen video capture.

SnapNDrag
Free screen capture utility.

Built-in Options (Windows)
Print Screen
Captures the entire screen to the clipboard.

Alt-Print Screen
Captures the active window to the clipboard.

These images can be edited in the Paint accessory program, or in the paint module of your favourite image editing application.

3rd Party Win Software
I have not been able to locate any system-based utilities which will function from within other applications. However, there are a number of "stand-alone" applications which offer screen capture facilities:

CaptureEze Pro
Dedicated screen capture program. 45 day fully functioning evaluation available.

FastStone
Capture windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. Free.

HyperSnap-DX
Good looking screen capture program, though imprints all output until registered. (Also available from this site is HyperCam, for making AVI screen movies.)

Irfan View
A free image editing application which includes a screen capture facility (under Options menu).

PaintShop Pro
Fully fledged graphics program. Includes dedicated screen capture tools, with a number of setup options, as well as a wide array of image editing capabilities.

ScreenHunter
Neat, easy to use screen capture software for Windows. Free.

SnagIt
Includes an editing module to easily add arrows, captions, etc.
