Most educators will, at some stage,
find the need to present pictures and video captured directly from
a computer screen.
Both the Macintosh and Windows OS provide built-in screen capture capabilities, albeit fairly basic on Windows. This page provides some info about these built-in mechanisms,
as well as links to 3rd party commercial, shareware and freeware applications, which provide some more
advanced capabilities.

- Cmd-Shift-3
- Takes a snapshot of the entire screen, (with camera sound effect!) and saves it automatically to the user's desktop folder as Picture 1. Subsequent screen shots
will be stored on the desktop as Picture 2, Picture 3, etc.
Cmd-Shift-4
- Converts your cursor
to a "cross-hair", allowing you to define a specific rectangular area of the screen to capture. This includes drop down menus, after you release the mouse button.
Cntrl-Cmd-Shift-4
- Same as above, except the captured image is pasted to the Clipboard, rather than being stored on the desktop as Picture 1. The image can then be pasted directly into a document.
Capture an entire window only
- To capture a particular window, in the Finder or an application, follow the Cmd-Shift-4 options above to capture a particular area of the screen, then press the space bar after you see the cross-hair.
The cross-hair will change to a camera which you can click on the chosen window to capture to the desktop or clipboard.
Grab
- OSX also includes the Grab utility, (in the Utlities Folder)
designed for "grabbing" screen shots.
After launching Grab, choose the type of capture you want to use from the Capture menu.
Then use Cmd-Tab to switch to the application where you want to make the screen capture:
If you hold down the Cmd key, each time you press the Tab key the next active application will be selected in the Dock. Release both keys when the desired application is selected.
You can then take your screen grab, and copy and paste it into whatever application you are using for your publication.

Paparazzi
- Take screenshots of entire web pages, including the bits that you need to scroll down to see!
- Screen Shot Plus 2.3
- Neat Dashboard widget lets you take screenshots on the fly. Save to HD or clipboard, in a variety of formats, etc. Free.
ScreenCaptureGUI
- Takes timed screen captures while you have a DVD paused or playing in Apple's DVD Player application.
