Desktop Maintenance - NetRestore QuickStart Documents (Mac)
Netrestore is software designed for making images of a "master" computer, and then restoring that image to multiple computers. The process is entirely GUI driven, and is relatively straightforward.

The notes below describe the application of Netrestore in a school environment.

Netrestore and Carbon Copy Cloner can be downloaded from www.bombich.com.

Direct Re-image (pdf - 246k)
Clone one computer directly from another.

Requires only a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software (free) and a FireWire cable. Takes about 1 hour to clone each computer.

Re-image From Local HD
(pdf - 747k)
Create an image of your "master" computer on an external FireWire drive, then "restore" that image to other computers.

Requires an external FireWire hard disk and a copy of Mac OSX 10.5. Once the original image is created, the re-imaging of each subsequent computer takes less than 15 minutes (depending on the size of your image).

Re-image From Network Server (pdf - 1.8Mb)
Re-image multiple computers simultaneously using an image stored on an OSX server.

This option requires an external FireWire hard disk to create the "master" image, and Mac OS X Server and a fast network (min 100Mb) to re-image network computers.

Once the "master" image is created, and the server is configured, it takes less than 15 minutes to re-image each computer (depending on image size). Multiple computers can be restored simultaneously across the network.

Adding a new NetRestore image (pdf - 249k)
Modifying your existing network Netboot/NetRestore setup to include new or alternate images.
