The NSW Government
has made a major commitment to delivering computers and
associated support to all NSW schools. Below is a summary of
the Government's original policy (December
1995) .

Technology
Program Summary
In
summary the Government School Technology Program targets,
over a three year period:
- training of
15,000 teachers in the use of technology in the
classroom
- appointment
of 40 Technology Advisers to District Offices
- development
of curriculum materials to support teachers in
integrating technology into the learning process
- increased
computer co-ordinators time
- connection
of all Government schools to the Internet
- provision
of personal computers to schools

Government
Goals
The NSW
Government has established four long term technology
goals:
- every child
should be familiar with computers as an educational
tool
- the use of
computers across all subject areas should be
optimised
- computers
should help to achieve educational outcomes more
efficiently and with greater quality
- students
should develop analytical, organisational and problem
solving skills to cope with expanding access to
computerised information

- Connection
of all schools to the Internet

Role of
Technology Adviser
- Assist
schools in developing technology plans to support
school and state priorities

technology advice to schools on local area networks,
personal computer hardware and software,
communications and technology purchases.

collaboration with curriculum advisers in advising
teachers on how they can use technology to enhance
their teaching programs .
- Work with
training and development staff in delivering
technology training

Teacher
Training
15,000
teachers are to be trained (over three years) in the
integration of technology in the classroom:
- A thirty
hour training course (Technology in Learning and
Teaching - TILT ) is being developed, comprising six components:
- Internet
- Teaching
and classroom management practices
- Computers
and related technologies
- Hardware
to enhance teaching and learning
- Software
to enhance teaching and learning
- Future
directions
- Each
component comprises an interactive satellite
broadcast, a hands on workshop and time for teachers
to practice skills in their schools.

Staffing
Supplement
The
Government will ultimately provide a full-time computer
co-ordinator in app 370 schools in NSW. The details of
this initiative are yet to be finalised.

Internet
All
schools will be connected to the Internet by December
1996 and will be provided with a personal computer with
network capability, Internet Software, a modem connection
to the Department's Internet sevice provider and training
in the use of the Internet
Internet
Curriculum Materials
Support
materials are being developed for each secondary key
learning area
- A document
for K-6 teachers is also planned which includes
information about the use of computers in all six
primary key learning areas
