This Wikipedia entry provides a starting point for some interesting reading about the Ekman Spiral and the Coriolis Effect that result in the upwelling of deep ocean water, which has made the water at our beaches so cold this summer. (And also explains the algal bloom that has been apparent at some northern Illawarra beaches.) Could be a good discussion-starter for some Science classes next week.
