Listserves provide a forum for people with a common interest to share
ideas via e-mail.
A listserve is like
a glorified mailing list. When you send a message to the
listserve (known as the list), everyone on the list receives a copy of your message. On most lists,
any reply you make to a message posted to the list also goes
to everyone on the list. Much like a round-table discussion.
If you don't want to participate in discussions on the list then you can just read the e-mails without making a response.
There are hundreds
of thousands of lists operating on the Internet, covering
every interest you could possibly imagine (and some you
probably can't!).
The lists below are related to supporting educators and the use of ICT in schools. With maybe the exception of the
OZTL list, and some of the Apple lists, these lists are
relatively "low volume" - ie you won't be deluged with too much mail.
With the specific nature of most lists, and considering the volume of mail generated by some lists, it is a good idea to configure automatic filing of list e-mails into separate subfolders in your mail client (using the Rules feature), or even setup a separate free e-mail account just for
your listserve mail.
